KEEN was founded in 2003 by Martin Keen and Rory Fuerst, launching in Alameda, California. The concept traces back to 1999, when Martin Keen jammed and broke his toe on a metal ring during a sailing trip off Rhode Island — an experience that led him to design a sandal with a protective toe bumper for boaters. That idea became the Newport Sandal, the shoe that launched the brand in 2003.

In 2006, KEEN relocated its headquarters and factory to Portland, Oregon, where the company is still based today, known for outdoor footwear built around durability and a strong social/environmental mission.
